Like Xverse wallets, Leather wallets are also non-custodial wallets meaning that you hold your own seed phrase and passwords which minimises the risk of data breaches compared to a custodial wallet which stores these for you. However as always, losing access to your seed phrase means losing access to all your crypto and someone gaining access to your seed phrase means they have access to your crypto, so it is important to take care of it. Similarly to Xverse, Leather wallets are also compatible with Ledger hardware meaning your keys such as your seed phrase can be stored offline when your wallet is not in use making it less vulnerable to hacking attempts. However as mentioned before these devices can be lost or become damaged meaning without a back up of your seed phrase you lose access to your assets. While on the topic of security, it is important to be aware that fake apps or browsers are around and therefore it is vital that you use the legitimate Leather app and website.
Leather wallets are compatible with Stacks (STX), Bitcoin (BTC) and stable coin. Stable coins are a type of coin that is less volatile than other crypto currencies as it is tied to a (currently) more stable asset such as gold. These offer the security and decentralisation on crypto currencies with the added benefit of more stability associated with traditional assets. A special feature of the Leather wallet is that you can swap Stacks to sBTC and stable coins directly in the wallet. sBTC is a coin that is tied to Bitcoin’s value but operational on the Stacks ecosystem. This means that your Bitcoin can be used in apps linked to the Stacks ecosystem. Again, similarly to Xverse, it is possible to stack STX (stacks) through Leather which means locking away some of your stacks to help build the crypto system, in return you are rewarded with Bitcoin.
Leather is connected to marketplaces such as Magic Eden, Ordinals market and Gamma meaning that you can buy Ordinals, rare sats and NFTs through the wallet meaning buying and selling ordinals such as rare sats can be done through the wallet.
