Jpeg Sats
First there was jpeg! Before the iconic Papa John’s pizza sale in May 2010 the sale of a Jpeg (digital picture) was made using Bitcoin in February 2010. A BitcoinTalk forum user by the name of Sabunir used the forum to advertise a desktop wallpaper they had created for the price of 500 Bitcoin (approximately $1 at the time). In order to purchase the wallpaper users were instructed to send the coins to Sabunir’s wallet, they were then to message Sabunir privately stating the time the coins were sent. After which Sabunir would send the buyer a link to the jpeg. Although it took some time, with some even actively voicing disinterest in the image, on the 24th of February 2010 Sabunir’s wallet received first one transaction of 100 Bitcoin then another of 500 Bitcoin. A bonus fact that makes this sale even more intriguing is that the sale was facilitated by none other that Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto who joined in the discussion on the forum. Sats used in the purchase of this digital wallpaper are called Jpeg Sats.
