Rare Sats
Approximately every 10 minutes a new block on the blockchain is unlocked and a miner is given a reward block, this is currently 3.125 Bitcoin but halves with each Bitcoin halving. In order to ensure that a new block is opened at this consistent rate the difficulty of unlocking a new block is adjusted every 2,016 blocks (roughly every 2 weeks). This is because new miners join the race to unlock transaction blocks, making the unlocking process easier and faster. A rare Sat is the first Sat in the first reward block following a difficulty adjustment. This means that since the Bitcoin halving in 2024, for about every 6,300 Bitcoin and every 630 billion Sats there is 1 rare Sat. Prior the halving these were even less rare Sats as the reward block was worth more Bitcoin. For example, when the reward block was worth 50 Bitcoin there would be 1 rare sat for every 50x100million Sats.
